Use this directory to find the best underground web series and short films by style, aesthetic or vibe.

What is the Stoner Comedy?

Generally this definition refers to works that reference stoners or are meant to be watched while stoned, but they can also refer to works that feature humor based around stoner-logic. The absurdist black humor used in Rick and Morty and Smiling Friends is a staple throughout this genre and can be characterized as abstract, dark, surrealist anti-humor. Shows in this genre like to feature deadpan character interactions and semi-improvised dialogue.

About

This master list was created by Zion D. C. a writer and lover of absurdist indie animation. He fell in love with the genre of media after discovering Michael Cusack’s Smiling Friends, which resulted in a deep dive into the Pandora’s box of indie stoner animation. Zion eventually realized that this niche genre of media was one of the rarest and most difficult to discover and so he began cataloging all his best finds in a large list. This list became a visual tree, connecting all of the shows he found by theme, style and animator, eventually evolving into the website you are viewing now. The purpose of this interactive list is to help viewers instantly find the shows they want to watch without needing to perform extensive research. In addition to that, this list seeks to promote underground and rising animated works, helping independent artists find their niche audiences.
